Finally, ‘Nobody Here’: The Most Important Vaporwave Documentary Has Arrived
After nearly six years of waiting, it’s finally here. Nobody Here, the definitive documentary on the elusive and nostalgic genre of Vaporwave, is now available to the public.
The journey to release has been a long one. The film was originally crowdfunded almost six years ago, leaving fans wondering if the project would ever see the light of day. But the wait is officially over. Following a premiere screening that wrapped up around 2:00 AM (here in France), and a tense 48-hour anticipation window, the documentary has dropped online.
So, where can you watch it?
If you were one of the original backers of the crowdfunding campaign, check your email inbox immediately. The film is waiting for you for free on Gumroad. For everyone else, you can now catch the film on YouTube. However, if you want the best experience, you can purchase the HD digital version for just €5. For the true analog purists, physical editions are also available on DVD and VHS.
A Gift from the Community, For the Community
Having watched the film myself, I can say it is a heartfelt and important time capsule for the scene.
Without diving into spoilers, Nobody Here excels at exploring the genre’s mysterious early days, presenting a variety of viewpoints on the scene, and capturing how the artists themselves feel about the movement that inspires them.
Is it perfect? Not entirely. The documentary is missing a lot of key artists and major events from the genre’s history. Even with an impressive roster of interviewees, you will likely notice some important absences. However, these flaws do not diminish the fact that Nobody Here feels like a beautiful gift made by the community, for the community.
Why You Should Watch It
If you are a longtime fan of Floral Shoppe, Roman statues, and slowed-down 80s funk, this film is essential viewing. It serves as a fantastic medium to deepen your knowledge of the genre’s roots.
More importantly, it might be the perfect tool to introduce your friends and family to Vaporwave. For those outside the bubble, the genre can be hard to explain. This documentary finally provides a tangible entry point.
Nobody Here is a beautiful archive of a pivotal moment in internet music history. Let’s hope the community continues to build upon it, filling in the missing chapters in the future.
