Hey everyone BIG NEWS today ! B O R T media is officially joining the team ! Moving forward, we’ll be featuring deep dives and small articles breaking down their mixtapes. B O R T will walk us through each project in detail talking about his inspirations, and explaining why some tracks have their places in the mixtape.
This mixtape was inspired from a single conversation. I remember hearing Agnar on Hot Takes exploring the “New Internet” sub-genre, and the idea stuck with me: a collective digital rebirth where we cut the cord on the old noise and start fresh.
I wanted this journey to trace that emotional arc. We start with the grounded, familiar rhythm of 2000s-influenced trip-hop and downtempo beats. But as the playback continues, the signal starts to change. The atmosphere shifts into something ambient and hopeful, though a “yin-yang” tension remains. Cracks of static and distortion keep this dream grounded. The mood grows more computerized, yet it never loses its sincerity, eventually breaking through into a final moment of celebration.
Through this mixtape, certain artists and moments stood out to me:
- Girls: They have been putting out some incredibly exciting material lately. Their sound is a perfect distillation of that Y2K energy that feels so central to this aesthetic.
- M00NPlants: This project offers a really interesting dive into “abandoned grocery store music.” It’s a specific niche of mallsoft that I don’t think we hear nearly often enough, and it fits perfectly here.
- PCPエンジェルダスト: For anyone who loves the energy of 2000s dance music, this entire album is incredible. It brings a necessary pulse to the mix.
- Wiiware and cleareyes2005: Their album Play like a pro! is a standout. Everyone knows the Wii Sports soundtrack is iconic, but the plunderphonic layers they’ve added here are just brilliant.
- Kratzwerk: Cyber Future is such a fun, catchy exploration of our relationship with computers. It captures that Y2K-influenced optimism perfectly.
- EMBA Soundsystem: Their Tribute to Twin Peaks was a really fun addition, bringing a layer of mystery and tribute to the flow.
- Emotion Chip: The album Transference provided some of the most powerful tracks I’ve heard recently. These serve as the real accent points of the mix—heavy, computerized, and completely captivating.
- Johnson Enterprises: This is one of the many projects from Eccosystem. I love how it pokes fun at those 90s corporate leadership videos. It carries a strange sincerity that almost masks the “corpo-greed” spirit underneath.
Woven toward the end of the mix is a message I felt strongly to include. We live in a time where it feels like we have no more heroes, so we have to shift our focus to our small communities. Be the hero in your own circle. Things are tough right now, but there is power in waiting it out together.
