One of the most remarkable qualities of the vaporwave community is how its creative pulse expands far beyond the music itself. It bleeds into aesthetic art, retro visuals, and the very media from which it draws inspiration. That same spirit extends into how we talk about, share, and celebrate the sounds we love. Across the scene, dedicated curators and hosts have taken up the mantle to spotlight emerging artists, archive local sub-genres, and build physical and digital spaces where listeners can tune in together.
To honor the people behind the mic and the board, I am launching a new series for Vaporloot: Vaporwave On Air. Over the coming weeks, we will be featuring the creators, station managers, podcasters, and platform architects who build the spaces where our community gathers.
As I began digging into the current state of independent broadcasting, I was struck by just how vibrant and active the vaporwave radio ecosystem really is. From community radio dials in Pennsylvania and Florida to late-night FM waves across the UK, a passionate network of DJs is keeping live radio culture alive and dedicated to ambient, synth, and vaporwave soundscapes.
As a former college radio DJ myself (shout out KSSU), I have always felt the unique magnetism of radio. There is something sacred about a group of people driven purely by love for the music, loading up physical or digital crates, taking to the airwaves, and building community one broadcast at a time. Showing up week after week with a freshly curated tracklist takes real dedication, but that passion to share, connect, and elevate new artists makes it all worthwhile. In an era dominated by cold algorithmic playlists, independent radio remains a uniquely human, deeply personal medium, acting as a living transmission of taste, atmosphere, and artistic expression.
In this first installment, we are spotlighting the pioneer DJs and show producers who keep vaporwave alive on the dial.I had the opportunity to connect with some of the most influential voices in vaporwave radio today, including DJ Nomad, DJ x86, MemphisLive, and more, to talk about their programming, their passion for the medium, and how you can tune in.

In Conversation with DJ Chowda
BORT: What is the concept behind Ambient Hour, how did you come up with the name DJ Chowda, and what is the special sauce that keeps listeners tuning in?
DJ Chowda: I have always felt like ambient and vapor music say more than songs with lyrics. Whether it is a track that takes you through a virtual fishing adventure on a fake, lost game like River Master or a darker, surreal take on cartoon soundscapes like The Spongetaker, there is always an engaging story waiting in the world of vaporwave. The name DJ Chowda actually originated from an inside joke with my friends, essentially because I am Chowder from Monster House. I have always loved the way it sounded, and now I get to repurpose it for the airwaves.
As for the special sauce, I feel like there are a couple of distinct elements that keep listeners coming back. First, there is that sweet crackle of vinyl. The static and surface noise actually add to the music, giving it a tactile warmth that feels more genuine and authentic than pure digital streaming, making the sound feel like it is physically popping out of the speaker at you. On top of that, I put a heavy emphasis on fresh weekly curation. I actively avoid repeating tracks, making sure to bring all-new material to the board every single week. Once, I played The Spongetaker’s album on air and had listeners calling in right away asking what it was. At the end of the day, these artists are making such incredible music that people cannot help but tune in, because vaporwave really is that good.
BORT: Where do you see untapped opportunities for creators in the current streaming landscape?
DJ Chowda: While it is not completely untapped, new artists are constantly arriving in the scene and sometimes get overshadowed by larger names. Sure, Equip has banger after banger and DSFWAN can’t seem to make a bad album, but there are so many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Shining a light on smaller, independent artists is something more platforms should lean into.
BORT: Who is an artist you’ve been loving lately that deserves a shoutout?
DJ Chowda: I had to think about this one for a while! While I genuinely love every artist producing in this space, I have to give kudos to the creator who brought me into this realm: Other Nothing. They are genuinely one of my favorite ambient artists, and I can lose myself in those albums for hours, days, or months. If there aren’t any Other Nothing fans left on earth, I must already be dead.

SynthWorld with DJ Nomad
If you drift down the FM dial to the sunny coast of Southwest Florida late on a Thursday night, you might just catch a broadcast beaming in from a different dimension entirely. At the helm is DJ Nomad, a self-described explorer of the Retroverse who bridges the gap between retro nostalgia and cutting-edge modern DJ culture.
Broadcast Details:
SynthWorld, hosted by DJ Nomad, airs bi-weekly on Thursday nights from 11:00 PM to 1:00 AM EST across WSLR 96.5 FM in Sarasota, Florida, and WBPV 100.1 FM in Bradenton, Florida.

In Conversation with DJ Nomad
BORT: What is the narrative concept behind SynthWorld, how did you get connected with WSLR, and what is the special sauce that keeps listeners coming back?
DJ Nomad: SynthWorld follows Retroverse explorer N꩜MAĐ on a nostalgia-fueled quest for an unknown purpose, with clues hidden deep in the depths of each planet of retro electronica. I started the show when I was working for a media company in downtown Sarasota, producing a local segment called Discovering the Rosemary District. During that gig, I interviewed WSLR co-founder Arlene Sweeting. Towards the end of our chat, I asked her how I could become a programmer at the station, and she told me I just needed to produce a show idea and demo for the WSLR Board. I had already spent years developing a chip on my shoulder about how under-appreciated the retrowave scene was, which fueled my desire to promote these extraordinary artists.
As for the special sauce, I think unlike a good chunk of promoters in this scene, my show aims to fully incorporate the entirety of the retrowave landscape, which boasts an incredible diversity of style and emotional depth. Add in lots of rad sampling, effects, and my glitchwave slant to mixing, and you get a show with the passion to deliver an array of vibes appealing to a wide set of musical palettes.
BORT: Where do you see untapped opportunities or gaps in the current vaporwave streaming landscape that creators should lean into?
DJ Nomad: I think leaning into vaporwave-style covers and sampling of popular songs, both retro and modern, is a great way to expand audience appeal while showing off the genre’s versatility. I’ve seen other artists do this elsewhere in the scene, and it ends up connecting them to new listeners who are often unaware the retro scene even exists, thus lifting the nostalgia ocean and all the boats in it.
I’m also a firm believer that we need more vaporwave artists to perform live and bring their music to audiences that wouldn’t normally stumble upon this corner of electronic music on the internet. I know that with the right kind of promotion, this scene can break through the crusty floor of lame bass-heavy, mashup fast-food EDM and what’s left of the stagnant house scene, taking our retro world boldly into the future of electronica.
BORT: Who is an artist you’ve been loving lately that you want to give a shoutout to?
DJ Nomad: The more recent vaporwave artists that I’ve discovered in the last year and fallen for would be VirtualRealityDeluxe, E Z R A ゴーバー, ホテル shampoo, and midnight première. There are so many more to mention, but those have definitely been getting heavy rotation in my ears.

Staring at the Ceiling with DJ Double & Cy
Traveling west into the state of Texas, the late-night airwaves deliver a distinct mix of sonic recontextualization and unexpected sample explorations. Airing out of San Antonio, Staring at the Ceiling is a midnight sanctuary hosted by DJ Double alongside co-host Cy. Part of KRTU’s Indie Overnight programming, the duo anchors their tracklists on pushing boundaries, digging deep into unusual source material, concept-driven projects, and philosophical discussions on what makes vaporwave truly resonate.
Broadcast Details:
Staring at the Ceiling is hosted by DJ Double and Cy on 91.7 KRTU San Antonio, airing Friday mornings during the late-night from 12:00 AM to 1:00 AM CST.

— DJ Double
In Conversation with DJ Double & Cy
BORT: What is the story and concept behind Staring at the Ceiling, and what is the special sauce that keeps listeners tune in late at night?
DJ Double: When I was little, my dad told me that if I couldn’t sleep, the best thing to do was simply lie in the darkness and stare at the ceiling. As I got older and discovered music properly, I built a massive playlist of tracks to accompany my insomnia called Staring at the Ceiling. When I got the chance to host my own show at KRTU in the midnight slot, I decided to transfer that exact experience to the listeners. A few months later, Cy joined me, and we’ve been running it as a pair ever since. Having a second mic makes a huge difference in the show’s dynamic. Being able to have a genuine conversation with a friend who loves vaporwave even more than I do allows us to dig into the philosophy behind what we play and what makes it special.
Cy: Seconding Double on that secret sauce, as we get to have really great discussions about the music. Being part of that conversation and giving listeners the deeper context behind what they’re hearing adds so much value to the broadcast.
BORT: Where do you see untapped opportunities or gaps in the current vaporwave landscape?
DJ Double: As someone who produces music myself, two big things I think artists should explore more are broadening their sample sources and experimenting with album concepts. Vaporwave as a genre is fundamentally about recontextualization, taking a sound that already exists and modifying it to fit your artistic vision. Even within sample-based music, there are endless possibilities, so I’m always curious why we tend to revisit the same genres to reiterate on the same ideas. There’s nothing wrong with sticking to a proven formula, but as both a creator and curator, I’m most drawn to projects that use unusual samples like Girls’ math-rock-sampled works, explore a novel theme like Strmi’s catalog, or tap into burgeoning spaces like signalrave.
Cy: I do think there’s always room for more immersive concept albums, music that tells a complete story or builds a specific theme like Lego Castle: 1979-1998 by Dreamcastle. There’s also exciting potential in multimedia integrations. Things like companion zines, or even interactive games like Æqwarium by Lost Colossus where completing the game let players download the full album before its official Bandcamp release, are incredible ways to push the medium forward.
BORT: Who is an artist you’ve been loving lately that you want to give a shoutout to?
DJ Double: For me, it is definitely A PORTRAIT OF ME by The Wanderer Along. It’s a fantastic analog horror concept album about a town slowly falling into chaos over the course of a broadcast day. It needs to be heard to be believed, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.
Cy: Too many to count! But I’m really big on Equip and all his aliases, especially River Master and Incognituition Interactive, as well as Windows96 with Plume Valley as a personal favorite. One album I really enjoyed recently that hasn’t gotten enough noise is Flora y Fauna de la Riviera Maya by xrt. If you like naturewave, definitely give that a spin.

MemphisLive & The Texas Underground
Moving further down toward the Gulf Coast, we land in Houston, Texas, where the local vaporwave ecosystem blurs the lines between live performance and radio broadcasting. While traditional radio dials pull in weekly shows, the underground pulse of the city is powered by localized warehouse showcases and high-energy DJ collectives. That’s where MemphisLive comes in. Positioned right at the intersection of stage and stream, he is not a traditional studio radio DJ, but rather a performer whose live sets and signature mixtape chops are frequently rebroadcasted across stations like 71.3 THE WAVE. By bridging the gap between Houston’s physical underground events and regional airwaves, MemphisLive helps extend the reach of Texas vaporwave to airwaves and screens everywhere. I sat down with him to talk about his DJ mixes, his screwed-and-chopped Houston roots, and how he is building live spaces for the scene.

— MemphisLive
In Conversation with MemphisLive
BORT: Let’s get the details straight for our readers, where do you broadcast your mixes, and how do you plug into the live Houston music scene?
MemphisLive: Howdy and thanks for having me! I publish Vaporwave DJ mixes on my YouTube channel every month or so. My mixes focus on specific vapor sub-genres like late night, signalwave, corporate, dance, and classics, with runtimes around 40 minutes. On the live side, I work with VRTX and BeatCircuit. VRTX is a collective of professional DJs holding down new-year electronic genres, regularly hosting vaporwave shows almost every week at their warehouse venue just north of downtown Houston. BeatCircuit is a collective of beatmakers, musicians, and rappers run by Uakari Cuts, Starknova, and Jredou_ko. Uakari Cuts also dabbles in vaporwave, and his collective tours Texas bringing full live hip-hop and electronic performances, frequently bringing in artists from across the country. Our latest event was Texas Diaries V, hosted by Virtual, an OG in the scene who has done a split with Waterfront Dining and is currently layering rap skills with classic 80s vaporwave melodies.
BORT: What is the concept behind MemphisLive, and what is the special sauce that keeps listeners coming back?
MemphisLive: I grew up in a Houston neighborhood called Alief during the 90s, a big hotspot for DJ Screw music and artists like Selena who inspired me with their distorted, interesting sample-based music and lush synth chords. My grandmother was an opera singer in Italy, and that blend led me to follow contemporary electronic music. I started my YouTube channel several years ago to deliver high-quality vaporwave music, DJ’d to give slight variations to classics or highlight underrated tracks, paired with VHS-styled visuals. My style has a DJ Screw hip-hop element with chops and scratches, alongside modern build-up transitions. I like to think mixing vaporwave creates a cohesive aesthetic that flows across tracks and maintains energy. Plus, all my non-live videos include full tracklists so listeners can easily find new artists. Last year, I dropped my first album and began performing live as a purely vaporwave producer/DJ, and I am currently exploring a more sampless approach using 80s and 90s synthesizers for my next project.
BORT: Where do you see untapped opportunities or gaps in the current vaporwave streaming landscape?
MemphisLive: During COVID, live online shows like VaporShave and George Clanton’s weekly YouTube streams were a huge hit and opened the door to online vaporwave broadcasting. The scene is far-reaching and often spread thin,so easy access to online entertainment is an untapped market that meshes with the internet aesthetic of the genre. Ideally, platforms like VRChat would be an even better solution because they bring the ability to host both 3D and 2D viewers, though adoption is still growing. Streaming gives you that live TV or sports feeling, where when something happens in real-time, you know people across the world are experiencing it together.
BORT: Who is an artist you’ve been loving lately that you want to give a shoutout to?
MemphisLive: GALAFUTURA is a veteran of the scene who really nails my favorite classic, distorted style of vaporwave paired with lush vocals. He is a true artist who has been around music his whole life with a deep musical understanding, focusing on Latin samples. He’s also one of the most talented visual makers in the scene. I once saw him shuffling VHS tapes through vintage gear and cameras, warping neon spectacles live to the music while managing video mixers to create what I consider the pinnacle of analogue vaporwave visuals. I’m very grateful he has performed visuals and live music for several of our shows.

The ChillCast on Sheffield Live
Jumping across the pond to the United Kingdom, we head to Sheffield for a late-night Friday broadcast tailored for nocturnal listeners and end-of-week wind-downs. Airing on Sheffield Live 93.2 FM and streaming globally, The ChillCast blends classic vaporwave, mallsoft, utopian scholastic, dungeon synth, hauntological soundscapes, and gentle field recordings into a tranquil, atmospheric hour. Maintained by an anonymous host who describes themselves as a bit of a cryptid, the program leans into its DIY community radio charm through creative prose readings, local event itineraries, and spontaneous track commentary.
Broadcast Details:
The ChillCast airs live on Sheffield Live 93.2 FM in Sheffield, UK, every Friday night from 11:00 PM to 12:00 AM BST. Broadcasts are unarchived, so tune in live as it happens.

— The ChillCast
In Conversation with The ChillCast
BORT: What is the concept behind The ChillCast, and what is the special sauce that keeps listeners tuning in to close out their week?
The ChillCast: The ChillCast was created with the express intention of having no one awake by the end! Essentially, its whole function is for listeners to have a relaxing hour at the end of the working week. There are two recurring segments. Around fifteen minutes in, I do a reading of a piece of writing I’ve been thinking about recently, which is not necessarily connected to the music in any way, but it sets the tone. The second segment happens around 11:30 PM and is called The Itinerary, where I list events and community happenings across Sheffield over the next seven days. As for the special sauce, listeners tell me there’s something about how the program is threaded together that keeps them coming back. I tend to speak off the cuff about the tracks, often accidentally straying into a more left-wing analysis of a vapor artist’s oeuvre than I originally intended. It has a quiet, DIY vibe all its own.
BORT: Where do you see an untapped opportunity or gap in the current vaporwave streaming landscape?
The ChillCast: Vaporwave and streaming go hand in hand, as the whole vaporsphere exists by word of mouth or text on a screen, so we all share the same broader audience. What I think is crucial is that we all have our own distinct tastes. My foundation skews toward ambient sound, utopian scholastic, and hauntological soundscapes. If creators want to make a lasting impression in the scene, it’s wise to tailor our respective playlists directly to our authentic tastes.Vibes are far more important than the Almighty Algorithm. I am me, another streamer is themselves, and someone like Pad Chennington is Pad. Authenticity in taste is what stands out.
BORT: Who is an artist you’ve been loving lately that you want to give a shoutout to?
The ChillCast: Euclid Agenda is doing fantastic work with their Hyperagora series. I’m still kicking myself for missing the cassette release of Hyperagora III.

56 kbit/s with DJ x86
Rounding out our journey across the airwaves, we head down to Virginia to spotlight a show that deeply captures the internet’s early digital architecture. While currently taking a well-deserved hiatus while host DJ x86 wraps up school, 56 kbit/s has long served as a vital broadcast for Virginia vaporwave fans and beyond. Rooted in a fascination with how home computers, dial-up speeds, and early Web culture shaped modern music discovery, DJ x86’s show acts as a sonic time capsule. Deeply connected to her local scene, she has used the platform to conduct incredible artist interviews with legends like Whitewoods, indie-pop standouts like Shormey, and i2k promoter and ArpWire TV director Roge Corp.
Broadcast Details:
56 kbit/s is hosted by DJ x86 on WRIR 97.3 FM in Richmond, Virginia. The show is currently on hiatus, but past episodes and re-runs can be streamed via the WRIR archives.

— DJ x86
In Conversation with DJ x86
BORT: What is the conceptual framework behind 56 kbit/s, and what is the special sauce that keeps listeners coming back?
DJ x86: My original show proposal looked like an exploration into how technology has influenced music production, distribution, and discovery, especially alongside home computers and the internet. 56 kbit/s refers to the maximum theoretical transfer rate of dial-up modems, which were widely available to consumers by 1998. As the show went on,it turned into a real collage of how I personally was influenced by the internet, both in the past and today. I’m a Y2K baby, right at that weird inflection point between generations. We had that last golden window before Web 2.0 and corporations completely took over, right before the death of the forum and static-webpage era, and right before enshittification began in full effect. For me, nostalgia always has a soundtrack. Discovering music through Pandora and YouTube led me down underground rabbit holes, and in 2018, George Clanton’s Slide completely shifted the course of my life. As for why a radio show specifically, I think it goes back to wanting to be different. The internet is everywhere now, but the radio feels distant. My goal is to invite y’all in and have a super-personal chat as we check out tunes that all tie back to the internet.
BORT: Where do you see an untapped opportunity or gap in the current vaporwave streaming landscape?
DJ x86: Internet radio! This is a wholehearted co-sign of AzuraCast, which is free and open-source software you can use to host a livestream of the music you love for the people you love.
BORT: Who is an artist you’ve been loving lately that you want to give a shoutout to?
DJ x86: I wanna give shoutouts to some of my Virginia homies like Shormey and Nightleek!

Tuning Off (For Now)
Bringing this first chapter to a close, it is clearer than ever that vaporwave radio is far more than just a nostalgic homage to broadcast media. It is a living, breathing community pipeline driven by pure passion, deep curation, and a shared love for the genre. From late-night UK ambient soundscapes to underground Texas warehouse sets and dial-up-inspired Virginia airwaves, these hosts and DJs prove that independent broadcasting remains one of the most human, authentic ways to experience music today.
I want to extend a massive thank you to DJ Chowda, DJ Nomad, DJ Double, Cy, MemphisLive, The ChillCast, and DJ x86 for taking the time to share their stories, their programming philosophies, and their love for the scene. Be sure to check out their stations, stream their archives, and support their work.
This is only the beginning for Vaporwave On Air. Over the coming weeks, we will continue exploring the various media outlets, podcasts, video platforms, and virtual spaces shaping the modern vaporsphere, celebrating the creators who keep us all connected.
Until next time, keep your dials locked and stay tuned.
