Dungeon curation #11 : Hollowpulse

Dungeon curation #11 : Hollowpulse

For this curation, we asked Hollowpulse to reach into the shadows. She’s an anonymous producer who began creating music in 2010 drawing from trance, techno, dubstep, and ambient, she later folded in vaporwave, dreampunk, and ghost tech. The result is a sound that breathes nostalgia, futurism, and melancholy. Concealed behind her four-eyed mask, she has chosen 5 albums that constructed and molded her world.

As always these records are making their way into the Dungeon !

1. Blank Banshee – Blank Banshee 0
This is the first vaporwave album that I ever heard, followed closely by Floral Shoppe by Macintosh Plus, back in 2014. I remember finding a list of electronic music genres online and I knew them all except for vaporwave. I searched it on YouTube and one of the first results was Blank Banshee 0, which I immediately fell in love with.
I absolutely adore the instrumentation, the use of samples and how they are flipped into something unique and haunting. For me, this album is the epitome of vaporwave and is the perfect introductory album for electronic music fans to get into vaporwave.

2. Death’s Dynamic Shroud – I’ll Try Living Like This
This album absolutely blew my mind when it first released, and continues to impress me to this day. I’ve listened to the album a lot and I find its one of those releases which always offers something different with each listen. There are new subtle sounds and sample-work that jump out after each listen making it feel fresh each time.

3. HKE – Sequence 777
I absolutely adore all 7 of these albums, which together make up ‘Sequence 777’, so much so that I can’t pick a single album – hence why I’ve included the whole collection. These albums are so nostalgic for me and transport me back to 2017 where I’d listen to the releases every single day and get so excited for the next month when something new would come out.
This project was one that caused me to fall in love with the dreampunk and ghost tech subgenres and is an album that continues to influence my work to this day.

4. Jude Frankum – One Zero Twenty
Another incredible album, this time from Remember (under his real name alias). I love the atmospheres conjured up by this album and while all his work inspires me, this album is one of my biggest musical inspirations. I love the vocal sample used in Dotted White Lines and the way it has been flipped.

5. 2814 – Birth of a New Day
What would dreampunk as a genre be without this album? This is another release which changes from listen-to-listen with subtle sonic elements. Not to mention the dreamy, dark, cyberpunk-inspired storytelling which runs throughout.

Her latest single, The Rising Hollow Moon, comes alive with a mesmerizing video crafted by VAL1S of Void TV. And the journey continues.
